Marriage License Guidelines
A Marriage License is $93.50 cash, and both parties must be present.
Must bring drivers license and/or social security number, or birth certificate.
Of this fee, $60.00 is remitted to the State Treasurer.
Applicants are exempt from payment of the $60.00 fee only IF:
they have completed a four-hour premarital preparation course.
To qualify for the exemption by attending a premarital preparation course,
both applicants must submit a Certificate of Completion showing that they have attended a course, together or separately, within one year of the date of the application for the marriage license.
The course must have been at least four hours in length.
The law does not give much guidance as to the content of the course,
other than to say that it MAY include conflict management, communication skills,
financial responsibilities, children and parenting responsibilities, and data
concerning problems reported by married couples who seek counseling. Premarital prep courses may be taught by any of the following: Psychologist, clinical social worker, licensed marital and family therapist, clinical pastor therapist, professional counselor, psychological examiner, official representative of a religious institution, any other approved instructor. The couple must bring in a
notarized statement from the counselor verifying that they have completed the course. With this statement the license will be $33.50 cash.
